As part of CSUC’s engineering curriculum there is a Intro to Manufacturing class where the semesters machining concepts accumulate to a semester long project. A hoist winch designed to pull 500 lbs vertically and about 1500 horizontally. This process involved CNC, Lathe machining, molten aluminum casting, welding, and about everything else you can imagine in a machine shop hands on.
